What Is Oil Based Paint? Oil based paint was used for centuries, until water based finishes were developed. The oil paint of today is different and safer than the oil paint of yesteryear, and it still has many applications for artists and industrial painters.

This hardy paint has a reputation for resisting harsh conditions and climates. The first paints, used in caves and early structures, were oil-based paints made by adding colored earth or soot to animal fats and using the resulting paste to decorate with. For thousands of years, various oils have been mixed with colorants derived from natural sources to make paint. Early artists from the time of Christ usually made their own paint and often the formulas were guarded secrets. The medium was usually vegetable-based oil. In the 1400s, lead was added to oil paint to enable it to dry faster, and this became an integral part of oil paints for hundreds of years. By 1978, the use of lead was banned in oil paint throughout much of the world including the US because it was toxic, particularly to children. Modern oil paints are quite safe.

Oil paint is any paint that does not use water as a medium. Rather, it contains natural or synthetic resins or oils as a base. Oil paint typically has a stronger odor than water paint. Since it dries by oxidation when exposed to air rather than through evaporation, it can take significantly more time to dry. It is higher in VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds, the chemical molecules that vaporize as the paint dries) than water paints and may cause mild upper-respiratory distress in some people. Typically it is more durable than water paints. Brushes and equipment must be cleaned with a solvent, like paint thinner or turpentine, since water will not dissolve oil paint.

Oil paints and varnishes are used in boat and shipbuilding because they withstand the elements and salt water. Many artists prefer them over water-based acrylic paints and claim the colors are richer. Oil paints are often used in architectural painting, for cabinets, woodwork and industrial settings. They are also used in Victorian homes for authenticity.

Take more time when using oil paint. It takes longer to dry and is harder to work with. Most synthetic brushes and rollers work fine with oil paints, but natural bristle brushes and lambswool or mohair rollers give a superior finish. Unlike waterpaints, oil paints cannot be touched up later without showing brush and roller marks. Oil paint may, in most cases, be used over water based paints and primers, but water paints should not be used over oil based paints without deglossing or priming the surface.

Oil paint may not be the best choice for all house painting applications, especially on exteriors. It dries to an impermeable film, and is not as flexible as acrylic paints. This means that as surfaces expand and contract due to temperature changes, it is more likely to crack and peel. Modern water paint technology has come a long way in recent decades, and for most household uses, it remains the better choice.

Oil paint works well on exterior metal. Oil-based wood stains tend to hold up better than water-based stains for exterior wood, and there is no substitute for oil-based stains for interior wood because they impart a richer, more uniform appearance.

Oil-based primers are the best choice for weathered wood, or cedar and redwood which may stain through water-based primers and paints. It is perfectly acceptable to put water-based acrylic paint over an oil-based primer, although rarely advisable to put water-based paint over an oil based non-primer paint.

Doxie’s Scanner Is Easy, Portable — and Cute, Too . Doxie was very easy to set up: You just need to download a smallish file and it installs quickly and easily. It was the only model we tested that could natively scan directly to Flickr, Picasa, Google Docs, and other services right out of the box, there’s no fuss about setup: Just enter your credentials for the account of your choice, and it’s ready to receive your scans. Doxie’s neat, too, and won’t leave PDFs or TIFF files littered around your hard drive like other scanners. Once files are uploaded to the cloud, they’re gone from your desk (unless you want to save files locally).

Powered by a single USB connection and about the size and weight of a curling iron, it’s eminently portable too.

It scans only one side of one page at a time, but can create multi-page documents with ease. One drawback: Since the scanner is so small and there’s no paper-feed tray, it’s easy for pages to go askew. You’ll need to devote time to carefully feeding pages into Doxie to ensure they get scanned straight. Also, we wish it were a little faster: at 20 or more seconds per page, it could take you all night to digitize those financial documents you “found” on the CEO’s desk.

The music launch of NTR’s ‘Brindaavanam’ will take place at Shilpakala Vedhika, Hyderabad on September 12th.Only the date was confirmed but the venue was not decided. It has been confirmed now and the music launch will be made a grand affair at Shilpakala Vedhika.

According to sources, ‘Brindaavanam’ directed by Vamsi Paidpally, has some excellent music by Thaman. It seems he has composed quite a few romantic numbers. Apparently, a song starting with the lyrics -‘Nijamena’ has come out well and it is NTR Jr’s favourite song.

Presently, the Brindaavanam unit is in Switzerland and shooting for the ‘Nijamena’ song in the snow filled highlands!

The stage is all set for the release of the audio of NTR-starrer ‘Adurs’. The film is directed by VV Vinayak and has tunes set by Devi Sri Prasad.

Not just for the fans of Junior, but also for Devi Sri’s, Adurs holds good craze. After a long time since Na Alludu, a musical album in the combination of hyper-actor Devi Sri and youth rage NTR is coming.

Marathi films are back on the traditional track with tales of exploitation of rural poor. Only difference that we find now is the change of characters. The place of shrewd Zamindar or Village Sarpanch has been taken by selfish politicians, who are in search of youngsters todance on their tunes to meet their personal goals. Gajendra Ahire’s latest film ‘Paaradh’ is no different from all those traditional Marathi films, but it sends out a strong message to today’s directionless youth; who are blindly following their leaders. Through this film, the maverick film maker makes a clear point of exploitation of rural youth by a power hungry politician, who uses them for his political gains and later sidelines them only to be killed by his opponents.

Ambadas (Makarand Anaspure) and his right hand Bappa( Milind Shinde) are involved in all such unethical practices at District level to prove their strength. They don’t miss a single opportunity to blackmail their own party seniors and one such victim is Prataprao(Vinay Apte). They first capture the dairy co-operative business with the help of young jobless youths from the village. Ambadas does not stop here, as his political ambitions are much higher. He dares to challenge even his party chief- Appa (identity not revealed) by exposing him with his wrong deeds with the help of his most trusted party worker Yashwant ( Siddharth Jadhav), whom he calls ‘Wagh (Tiger)’.

Yashwant-a small time party worker, who blindly follows the orders of his boss, suddenly comes into limelight. It is at this time Ambadas ditches him. His right hand Bappa, knowing the weaknesses of his boss, plays all dirty games in his name and even lures Yashwant’s younger sister Indu (Hemangi Kavi Dhumal) . Yashwant who belongs to a Warkari family, is the most notorious character in the family, who neither obeys his old father( Vitthal Omap) nor elder brother(Ravi Kale), who is a farmer.

Yashwant’s younger brother Anand (Amogh Talathi) , who is the mute witness to all the events the family faces, is actually the narrator in the film. The entire film is based on the political gimmicks of Ambadas and his link with Yashwant and his family. Finally, it is not Hemangi Kavi Dhumal in Paaradh, Marathi film Paaradhonly Yashwant who suffers, but his family members too. In the end of the film, Anand as a narrator tells that Siddharth who is undergoing sentence for the murder of Amabadas and Bappa, has one more year left for release and that his elder brother who had gone in search for justice is still missing. His sister-in-law(Vrinda Gajendra) works in the field and his ambitious sister Indu heads the women’s wing of the district. Finally, he concludes saying that he himself is well settled in a district place with his job and his son studying in a good Public school.

‘Paaradh’ begins well with realistic approach but drags in the second half with too many chase scenes, where Yashwant runs for his life, having been ditched by Ambadas. The characters of Ambadas, Yashwant, his elder brother ,his sister-in-law and sister Indu look realistic. The person who invites the attention is Milind Shinde in the role of Bappa. With his perfect visual expressions and body language, he has been able to present a real villain of Marathi films. Vinay Apte has been wasted in that role of Politician. There is no strength in his role, though he plays it with ease. Can’t find the reason for hiding the identity of Party chief. But, looking at the performances from Siddharth Jadhav, Makarand Anaspure, Hemangi Kavi Dhumal, Ravi Kale and Vrinda Gajendra, you tend to forget those few flaws in the film. Camera work by Chandrashekhar Iyer, Background music by Rahul Ranade and editing work by Rahul Bhatankar is pleasing.

Presenter: Amogh Cinetones
Producer: Anuradha Talati
Director: Gajendra Ahire
Music: Rahul Ranade
