This is the first-time effort of Ranjith, who will be debuting as director into the Tamil film industry with ‘Attakathi.’ Ranjith has assisted Venkat Prabhu in the latter’s films like ‘Goa.’ ‘Attakathi’ is a real-life story and at the same time a humorous take on the lives of guys based in the suburbs of Chennai. The film sees Dinesh and Swetha as the lead pair.

Dinesh has earlier appeared in ‘Aadukalam’ as well as in the more recently released ‘Mouna Guru.’ The film also sees a handful of fresh faces who are venturing in to cinema with this film. So why the name attakathi (a sword made of cardboard)?

The director recently revealed regarding the title of this film. He said, the hero of the film is just like a pseudo sword. All talk and no action. The film depicts a phase of the hero’s life – his family, people close to him, his friends and people whom he does not favour much, his relatives.

‘Attakathi’ is produced by Thirukumaran Entertainments and has music by Santosh Narayanan. The music audio of this film will soon go on air, and the film will see a release in a couple of months, reveal some sources in the industry.

The mega combo of Ulaganayagan Kamal Hassan and K.S.Ravikumar is back with a high budgeting movie. The movie is said to be a 6th film of the duo. The duo has previously worked together for five movies of which four are box-office hits apart from Manmadhan Ambu with Trisha as lady lead.

K.S.Ravikumar is busy with Superstar Rajinikanth’s Kochadaiyaan, the debut directorial venture of Soundarya Ashwin, which is on its way for post production works. Ravikumar is about to start Rana with Rajini, as way2movies reported viewers earlier, the film will go on floors from August 2012. So, the director is in operational works for his next project with Kamal Hassan.

Kamal Hassan apparently liked the story line that goes against corruption in all levels, narrated by the director K.S.Ravikumar and gave a nod. However when the script comes to reality, the film results in a mega budgeting project. It is heard that Kamal had informed Ravikumar that the movie should not be a sequel to Indian, as that was also on anti corruption.

G. Dhananjayan, Chief of South Business, UTV Motion Pictures has confirmed that the film’s shooting will be completed within next three months as they are planning to release it as a summer treat.

The Sri Lankan Tamils issue is always a sensitive one and any film on the same more often than not gains extra attention Director Pughazhendhi Thangaraj, who made ‘Kattrukenna Veli’ earlier, on a similar theme, tries his hands on the long-drawn ethnic issue again.

The difference this time is that he has documented the struggles of a young girl who suffered at the hands of the island army. Sathyaraj, Seeman and Sangeetha are the lead actors in the film.

Professor Natesan (Sathyaraj) is a Tamil sympathizer, who speaks out for their cause and often lands in jail for his outbursts. His wife (Sangeetha) too shares his concerns.

When the couple is expecting their child, a young girl Punithavathi (Neelika) from Batticaloa lands up in their house. She has allegedly been gang raped by Lankan Army personnel on 1 March 2009.

She is just 13 but is expecting a child. At this point, a noble doctor (Lakshmi) makes an entry. Natesan, his wife and the doctor try their best to ensure the safety of the child.

Charles Anthony (Seeman), an upright police inspector helps them. One day they come to know that the young girl is suffering from AIDS. They seek the help of Dr CND (Nasser). The girl is traumatized. How they go about helping forms the rest of the story.

Neelika, the young lass is a show-stealer, without doubt, and she displays her acting talent in abundance. Sathyaraj underplays his role while Sangeetha and Seeman do an adequate job. Veteran Lakshmi also deserves kudos for her performance.

Veteran cinematographer B Kannan measures up well and lives up to expectations. D Imman’s music is praiseworthy and matches the occasion.

Pughazhendhi Thangaraj deserves applause for making an honest attempt without bowing to commercial pressures. Kudos to Gemini Film Circuit for distributing such an honest venture and a sincere film.

Dev Anand’s wife and daughter will be leaving for London Tuesday night but the funeral will take place only Dec 9 or 10, his close associate said.

“Dev saab died on Dec 3 and his body was taken to a morgue. There is a rule according to which the body is released after seven days. So most probably his funeral will take place on Dec 9 or Dec 10,” Mohan Churiwala, who had been with the legendary actor for two decades, told us.

Dev Anand died of cardiac arrest Dec 3 in London. He was 88. His son Suniel Anand was with him.

Dev Anand’s wife Mona Anand (screen name Kalpana Kartik) and daughter Devina are flying to London from Mumbai for the last rites. Devina’s daughter Gina is staying back in Mumbai.

“After the funeral, there will be a condolence meet here in Mumbai. It will be organised at the Mehboob Studio. It is being organised there because of the sentimental reasons. The studio has his personal make room and which has been kept just like that. It still has his costumes, his makeup kit, etc,” said Churiwala.

The family would be placing a notice in the papers about the details of the condolence meeting once the date is finalised, he said.

Say hello to the second hero in Vikram’s next, ‘Thaandavam’ – Jagapathi Babu! This film will release simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu and Jagapathi Babu is one of the popular heroes in Telugu cinema.

Jagapathi Babu who recently completed his 100th film is bringing a change in his career by accepting a powerful second hero who has an interesting character in ‘Thaandavam’. The film commences with a test shoot on November 30 in Chennai and the full fledged shooting begins in January 2012. The film will be shot in many locations of USA, Delhi and Chennai.

‘Thaandavam’ has the principal star cast of Chiyaan Vikram, Anushka, Amy Jackson, Jagapathi Babu, Santhanam, Nasser and many others. The film has music by GV Prakash Kumar, lyrics by Na Muthukumar, editing by Anthony and art direction by Nagu. The film is written and directed by AL Vijay and will be released big by UTV Motion Pictures.

One of the best kept secrets of Kamal Haasan’s magnum opus ‘Viswaroopam’ is out. That the Ulaga Nayagan is playing the role of an Afghan. A grand set replicating Afghanistan was erected in Chennai where some crucial scenes involving Kamal were shot.

Sayed Jahid Shah Banoori, an Afghan student who is playing a role in ‘Viswaroopam’, is awestruck with the way Kamal recreated Afghanistan in Chennai and mastered Pashto, the language used by the natives in Afghanistan. “He is simply amazing,” the youngster says.

“One day, Kamal asked me to show him how we would perform Namaaz. I did it just once and Kamal performed it exactly the same way the next time,” he says, adding that scenes about the Talibans and the US forces entering into Afghanistan were shot in Chennai.

Directed by Kamal himself, ‘Viswaroopam’ is a bilingual simultaneously made in Tamil and Hindi. Touted to be an action thriller, Kamal is said to be playing more than one role in this movie. His younger daughter Akshara Haasan is helping him on the sets.

Kamal Haasan is being busy these days also maintaining a low profile on his forthcoming magnum opus Viswaroopam. The actor who is also donning the director cap for this big budget film is taking all care to keep his distinct look under wraps.

Pooja Kumar has bagged the leading lady role in Kamal Haasan’s forthcoming ambitious project Viswaroopam. Several actresses like Sonakshi Sinha, Vidya Balan, Sameera Reddy were in consideration for the role but the project has now landed in Pooja Kumar laps.

The debutant actress is from New York and is said to be the ardent theatre artist who also won several beauty pageants. Viswaroopam also casts Andrea Jeremiah in an important role. Kamal Haasan himself is wielding the megaphone for this Tamil/ Hindi bilingual which will simultaneously be dubbed in Telugu

Actress Chitrangada Singh, so far seen in offbeat roles, is excited about her first commercial film ” Desi Boyz”. She plays a professor with dollops of oomph, and says she feels as though she is making her debut.

Talking about the kind of work she has so far done, Chitrangada said: “Kaam ata tha, but ek jaisa kaam ata tha (Work came to me, but always the same kind of work came)…People couldn’t imagine me doing a commercial movie.”

The dusky beauty was in conversation with trade analyst Komal Nahta on his show on ETC Bollywood Business.

She was also in the capital Thursday, along with co-stars Akshay Kumar, John Abraham and Deepika Padukone, to share insights on the film with her fans.

“‘Desi Boyz’ is kind of a debut for me as I have been part of different kind of films so far. I was getting a bit bored of doing the same kind of cinema so I thought I should do something different. I had a great time working in my first commercial film,” she told reporters.

The actress made her Bollywood debut in 2003 with “Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi”, and was subsequently seen in films like “Sorry Bhai!”, “Basra” and “Yeh Saali Zindagi”.

In “Desi Boys”, Chitrangada plays Akshay’s love interest.

Sharing her experience of working with the action star, she told Nahta: “Akshay is fantastic. He’s very encouraging, warm and very humble. He helped me out with tips during dance sequence.”

She also refuted reports of constant cat fights with Deepika during the film’s shoot.

“All is well between me and Deepika and there were no tiffs. We have just one scene together and we spoke on the day we shot it and that too was shot few days ago. As a matter of fact, we both have encountered each other more now during the movie’s promotion,” she said.

While “Desi Boyz” will release Nov 25, Nahta’s tete-a-tete with Chitrangada will be aired Monday.

After her much-talked about debut opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Rockstar last week, American model Nargis Fakhri has decided to move base to Mumbai. Moving from New York, the newbie wants to take her film career more seriously. “I would like to stay back. Nothing in life is permanent, but for now, it’s a yes to this city,” says Nargis, adding that her modelling days are behind her. “Apparently, I’m no longer referred to as a model. And it doesn’t make sense to continue either. I enjoy this newfound craft and would like to see where I can go with it. I’m very excited.” Ask her about the kind of feedback she’s received for Rockstar and the debutante says, “I don’t want to read too much into it, but the reactions have been great. I look at the negative comments too in a positive light. What one person may say as criticism may be what someone else really liked. And from that, I can learn to be much better.” Nargis does, however, acknowledge that for a New York born and bred, half-Pakistani, half-Czech girl, Bollywood was a brave choice: “Acting was an accident. I was contacted and asked to meet the director (Imtiaz Ali), and I agreed because he was coming to Europe, where I was at that time. I heard the script and fell in love with it.” What followed, though, was one of the toughest phases of her life. “I left everything behind. I had no family or friends here. I worked 10 hours a day, Monday through Sunday. There were all sorts of exercises in language and dance, and so many things about it were very difficult. Imagine being in a strange country and learning a new craft; being brought into a space that you know nothing about. It’s very scary,” reminisces Nargis, who even broke down on the sets of the song Hava Hava… as she was overwhelmed by the chaos, while trying to learn her steps quickly. Post Rockstar, Nargis hasn’t signed any more films, but admits to receiving plenty of offers. “There are a lot of things going on, but I have a team handling them. I haven’t committed to anything yet,” she says, adding that she’d love to explore martial arts and action in her upcoming roles. She’s also become a favourite with brands, who’ve been lining up to sign her as their ambassador. And Nargis has already confirmed three deals – the latest with Van Heusen Woman. The interest in her has sparked off comparisons with more established contemporaries like Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor, who were apparently being considered for the same endorsement deals.
