It’s a little too soon to start making predictions about Apple’s next iPhone And the iPad 3 seems all but figured out, if reports are to be trusted. But there are some seriously hot and plentiful speculations circulating around an area that Apple hasn’t yet ventured into: TVs. Full-fledged, big-screen, living room-dominating TVs.

Multiple reports from multiple sources (supply chain, analysts, and anonymous Apple insiders, to name a few) make it appear all but definite that Apple is at least contemplating some form of TV. Of course, whether hardware ever sees the light of day is another story.

Here’s a look at some of the major past and current rumors swirling about Apple’s much anticipated “iTV.”

The Status of Apple’s Television Project

What really got rumors of an Apple television on the map were statements made by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs before his death to his biographer Walter Isaacson. Jobs told Isaacson that he’d “finally cracked” how to build an integrated TV that would synchronize content wirelessly with other Apple products. “It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine,” Jobs said.
Apple has had plans to develop a TV set since at least 2007, according to the New York Times.
Bloomberg Businessweek pegged iTunes creator Jeff Robbin as the head of the television project at Apple. Robbin also helped create the iPod.
Apple executives are currently holding meetings to determine what the experience will be like, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Digitimes says that Apple will finalize the hardware specs of its television in Q2 2012, with a release date towards the end of 2012.
Analyst Gene Munster thinks Apple’s TV will be high-end and cost twice as much as a comparable smart TV.

The Hardware

According to Digitimes, Apple’s sometimes-rival Samsung Electronics is purported to be making the chips for the television set, with production starting in November 2011.
The chip will be custom-made, like the A5 chip in the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, and a few suppliers are currently bidding to produce parts for the television: Siliconware Precision Industries, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, and Advanced Semiconductor Engineering. Apple already has a deal in place with TSMC for building its A6 and A7 processors, so it’s possible that the set could utilize one of these chips.
Sharp is supposedly providing the display for the Apple TV, which will be available in 32 and 37-inch sizes (also via Digitimes).
The set will likely be assembled at Foxconn, the same factory that manufactures Apple’s other products like iPhones and iPads.
