The choice is enormous, but your decisions will be resrticted by the character and condition of the house- and money. If walls are rogh, but not bad enough to replaster, choose something other than paint. Paint is relatively cheap, but avoid distemper, which has to be completely removed before you repaint. Plain paint in a positive colour is an admirable background for good furniture, objects d’art or a vase of flowers.Paint is one of the quickest and cheapest ways of changing a colour scheme.
Recent development have improved the looks, quality and performance of most paint. The addition of synthetic such as polyurethane, vinyl or acrylics has made it together, more washable, quicker drying, smoother and easier to apply.
Preparation for painting
The quality and type of painting are important, but equally important is their application and the quality of the surface you put them on. If you are doing it yourself, follow instructions carefully. If you are employing a professional painter make sure his written estimate gives details of making good, preparing the surface, any primers or undercoats and number of top coats. In this way you can have a comeback if he has skimped anything. It is not fair to say vaguely you want it done as cheaply as possible and complain later because the result aren’t first class.
