Wall paper and paint are still the quickest way to revamp an existing scheme, or make a dull room exciting. The way you deal with walls will make the difference between being interesting or fussy, bleak or calm, excitingor overpowering. First you must get the practical choices right.
Check what is available and what is structurally practical, and whether you can do it yourself or will need an expert. Then pause and think about the visual decisions. If you are moving into a new place, or have lived so long with a room that you have stopped seeing it, it sometimes pays to paint every thing white or cream to obliterate all past decisions and take in the room’s shape and potential. After a while you will know whether walls need warming, a ceiling needs lowering visually, or architectural features need emphasizing or removing.
Wood provides a warm insulating surface and reduces condensation. Tongue-and-groove paneling can be horizontal, vertical,or diagonal. Seal to preserve appearance. If walls are rough, but not bad enough to re plaster, choose something other than paint; wood-chip paper for instant. If the house suffers from condensation, and you have already put in extra ventilation and stepped up the background heat, surface the walls with a warm insulating finish. Wooden panelling help to counteract heat loss.
