CHENNAI: Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Wednesday said that the State government would not take a unilateral decision on the release of Rajiv Gandhi assassination case convict Nalini from jail.
Addressing a press conference at the DMK headquarters here, the Chief Minister said, “The State government will not announce a decision on its own on an issue that needs national level consultations,” indicating that the Centre would be consulted before arriving at a decision.
Asked about reports that the prison advisory board’s recommendations had been submitted to the government, Karunanidhi said: “The report is on the way.” In response to a question on his personal view on the release of Nalini, the Chief Minister said: “I can’t express my personal view.” Karunanidhi also said a resolution would be adopted at the DMK’s general council meeting which will be held on February 20, urging the Sri Lankan government to honour its promise of devolution of powers to Tamils and asking the Centre to do the needful to ensure this.
